1 The concept of sympathy in A. Smith cannot be equated with that of benevolence, as some commentators have interpreted it and inferred from this confusion that in the Theory of Moral Sentiments he had dealt with the altruistic side of human conduct, whereas in the Wealth of Nations with its egoistic side.
